Kia L.
Washington is a member of the Firm’s Real Estate and Banking Practice Group,
where she works with individuals and businesses to determine their
residential and commercial real estate settlement needs and develop
strategies to accomplish her clients’ goals.
Ms. Washington
has extensive experience in land title analysis for individuals, businesses,
and title insurance companies, with the purpose of identifying potential
title defects that must be resolved prior to settlement taking place, as
well as determining potential claims that may result or have already
resulted due to title defects.
Ms. Washington
also assists lenders and condominium/homeowners associations with their
collection and foreclosure needs, ranging from initiating and maintaining
commercial and residential foreclosure actions, to conducting trustees’
sales and determining the actions that need to be taken with respect to the
post-foreclosure, sale ratification process.
From her
prior work as a settlement attorney, Ms.
Washington
gained extensive knowledge in preparing residential and commercial real
estate transactions, from the beginning stages of contract/lease negotiation
and ratification, through the final stages of conducting closings.
As a former judicial law clerk to the Honorable Larnzell Martin, Jr.,
in the Circuit Court for Prince George’s
County, Maryland, Ms. Washington became
familiar with the requirements that need to be adhered to during residential
and commercial real property transactions, and she continues to utilize that
information to ensure her clients’ compliance with all necessary standards.
Ms. Washington obtained her J.D. from the
University of Baltimore School of Law. While
in law school, Ms. Washington
served as an International and Comparative Law Fellow.
She earned her B.A. in communications from the
University of Maryland,
College Park.
Ms. Washington utilizes her
background in communications to detail the different issues to be addressed
and resolved during the real estate transactional process.
Ms.
Washington currently publishes
Real Times, a real estate newsletter that focuses on the various nuances
and items to be addressed during a commercial and residential real estate
transaction. Ms. Washington is actively involved in several
organizations, including serving as the General Counsel for the National
Political Congress of Black Women and participating in the Real Estate
Finance Committee of the Maryland-National Capital Building Industry
Association. Ms.
Washington
is actively involved in the J. Franklyn Bourne Bar Association, the Maryland
State Bar Association, the Prince George’s County Association
of Realtors, and the Prince George’s
County Bar Association. Ms. Washington is admitted to practice in Maryland.
